Musk Ox Farm Celebrates Mother’s Day Tradition
PALMER, Alaska – A beloved Alaskan tradition, the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer is inviting mothers to enjoy a unique Mother’s Day celebration this Sunday, with free admission and a daisy for all moms. This event offers visitors the chance to meet 75 members of the musk ox herd, including three adorable calves just finding their feet. Notable among them is an old bull named Trebek, in honor of the late “Jeopardy!” host, Alex Trebek, who supported the farm.
Mark Austin, the farm’s executive director, expressed the joy of celebrating Mother’s Day alongside the unique musk oxen. “Who doesn’t want to celebrate Mother’s Day with a musk ox mom and the most adorable calf?” he remarked. The event marks the beginning of the summer season at the farm, which has been operational since 1964 and moved to its current location in 1986 for better access and educational opportunities.
This year’s Mother’s Day is expected to attract over 1,500 visitors, making it the busiest day of the year. The farm’s popularity has endured through generations, with Austin noting, “It’s a huge rite of passage for a lot of people.” Musk oxen, impressive ice age survivors, have become a staple of the Alaskan landscape, thriving since their reintroduction to the state in 1934.
Visitors on Sunday are encouraged to make donations, with many choosing to support the farm generously. Austin stressed the farm’s commitment to giving back to the community with this special event.
