During a recent forum in Beijing with Latin American leaders, Chinese President Xi Jinping subtly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump without naming him. Xi emphasized China’s stability and cooperation, contrasting it with the “bullying and coercion” seen in the ongoing U.S.-China trade war, which has affected countries globally, including over 30 in Latin America.
Xi expressed China’s willingness to collaborate with Latin American nations amidst rising geopolitical tensions and hints of U.S. unilateralism. Observers noted that Trump’s approach has alienated many in the region, particularly through threats like reclaiming the Panama Canal and negative remarks about immigrants. This has led some Latin American countries to seek alternative partnerships, viewing China as a stabilizing force.
China is now Latin America’s second-largest trading partner, with trade surpassing $500 billion last year, a significant leap from $12 billion in 2000. Xi’s government has been cultivating these ties, which serve not only economic interests but also geopolitical strategies, particularly regarding Taiwan. Following its diplomatic engagement in the region, especially with countries like Honduras, China has undertaken major infrastructure projects, further integrating into Latin America’s economic landscape.
At the forum, Xi announced plans to boost imports from the region, encourage more Chinese investment, and extend 66 billion yuan ($9.1 billion) in new credit for financing. He also expressed interest in increasing Latin America’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, which Colombia recently joined. As Beijing strengthens its influence in Central and South America, it appeals to regional desires for independence from traditional power dynamics, contrasting sharply with past U.S. policies.
