Alaska State Trooper Shoots Woman After BB Gun Incident

WASILLA, AK – An Alaska State Trooper shot and wounded a woman on Friday night near Wasilla after she allegedly pointed a weapon at him. Initial reports indicated the weapon resembled a semiautomatic handgun, but it was later revealed to be a BB gun.

The woman, who has yet to be publicly identified, was involved in a series of concerning 911 calls from her home in the Meadow Lakes area earlier that night. Trooper Kody Haley, who has served with the agency for eight months, was dispatched to check on her welfare. “The woman’s 911 calls left dispatchers with concern for her wellbeing,” said agency spokesperson Austin McDaniel.

Upon arrival at approximately 10:30 p.m., Haley made contact with the woman at her front door, reportedly without the presence of any other troopers. Trooper Haley requested that she exit the house with her hands empty; however, she drew a handgun and pointed it at him. In response, the trooper shot the woman due to her actions.

Medical personnel responded promptly and transported the wounded woman to an area hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Notably, her weapon—a BB gun—did not include an orange tip, which is standard for indicating it is not a real firearm.

Trooper Haley was equipped with a body camera during the incident, and the Alaska Bureau of Investigation is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Footage will be released after the state Office of Special Prosecutions completes its independent review and any related legal matters are resolved.
