Police Fatally Shoot Fairbanks Man Following Domestic Dispute
FAIRBANKS, AK — A 36-year-old man was shot and killed by police on Monday night after he fired upon officers responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex in Fairbanks. Thomas Bean reportedly shot and killed 29-year-old Jesse Bidgood prior to the police’s arrival.
The incident unfolded just before 10:25 p.m. at a residence on Washington Avenue, according to a statement from the Fairbanks Police Department and Alaska State Troopers. Bidgood, who was dating Bean’s sister, was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers spokesperson Austin McDaniel confirmed that Bean began firing at arriving officers with a semi-automatic rifle, hitting their vehicles.
Amid the exchange of gunfire, Bean was struck by police officers. “Due to his actions, multiple law enforcement officers shot at Bean, fatally striking him,” the statement read. Two officers were treated for minor injuries from shrapnel. The shooting occurred on the street outside the residence.
Both the homicide and the officer-involved shooting are currently under investigation, with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation leading the efforts. The state Office of Special Prosecutions will assess the use of lethal force by the involved officers. Those who discharged their firearms have been placed on administrative leave in line with Department of Public Safety policy.
“We recognize that incidents of this nature can be deeply traumatic for everyone affected,” stated Fairbanks Police Chief Ron Dupee. Dashcam and body-worn camera footage captured the events. This incident is part of a night of violence, as another shooting involving Alaska law enforcement occurred in Anchorage shortly after.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Bureau of Investigation at 907-451-5100.
