Press Release: Lynx Loppet Invitational Canceled Amid Unseasonably Warm Weather in Anchorage
Anchorage, AK – Jan. 23, 2025 – The Lynx Loppet Invitational, a central event in the high school cross-country skiing calendar, was canceled Friday morning due to severely deteriorating conditions on local ski trails. This decision arrived shortly after local coaches had met the previous evening, initially planning to proceed with the event despite earlier challenges.
The unseasonably warm weather, which has brought rain instead of snow to Anchorage, has significantly impacted training and competition for local teams. As a result, the recent Wolverine Relays were also scrapped. West coach Joey Caterinichio expressed concern over maintaining athlete engagement in such uncertain conditions, noting the struggle to keep practices consistent. “Right now, we’re doing indoor workouts,” she explained, recounting inventive solutions like scavenger hunts after gym sessions to keep up morale.
Missed opportunities primarily affect students new to the sport, many of whom rely on the high school season for their skiing experience. Senior skier Liam Dudley commented on the disappointment felt throughout the community, especially for those with limited access to skiing outside of school competitions.
Despite grooming efforts and the deployment of manmade snow, high school athletes have found it challenging to access suitable trails. The Kincaid Park facilities have been reduced to a “gerbil loop” for over 300 kids, resulting in a cramped and unsafe environment for training.
As the skiers and coaches navigate these difficult circumstances, they remain focused on maintaining a sense of community, even amid the upheaval. With the regional championships fast approaching, uncertainty looms over whether the season can be salvaged.
