Zeon and Sino Applied Technology Partner to Advance Battery Technologies
TAOYUAN, Taiwan – October 12, 2023 – In an exciting development for the electric vehicle and battery markets, Zeon Corporation and Sino Applied Technology (SiAT) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing the production of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) conductive paste, crucial for next-generation lithium batteries.
Zeon is leading a $20 million Series C funding round for SiAT to bolster its production capacity of SWCNTs, which are gaining traction in various sectors, including electric vehicles, drones, and renewable energy storage systems. These advanced nanomaterials offer superior electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and chemical stability compared to traditional conductive agents, thereby enhancing battery energy density and lifespan.
Mass production of SWCNTs has historically faced challenges, particularly due to the complexities of the high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Zeon, a pioneer in this field since 2015, employs its patented Super Growth technology to produce ZEONANO®, characterized by its high purity and surface area. The partnership also aims to tackle the dispersion issues associated with SWCNTs, leveraging SiAT’s extensive expertise in battery nanomaterials to ensure better integration into electrode formulations.
As a result of their collaboration, Zeon and SiAT have successfully developed well-dispersed SWCNT conductive pastes—LSC2102 (NMP-based) and LSC1101 (water-based)—which have shown promising improvements in energy output and cycle life when used in lithium battery cathodes and anodes.
With plans to scale annual conductive paste production to 25,000 tons by 2030, this partnership not only addresses the immediate needs of the battery market but also holds potential for transformative applications in various industries, including semiconductors and composites, contributing to sustainability and technological advancement globally.
