ADFG Updates Fishing Regulations for Wrangell Narrows

Press Release: Alaska Department of Fish and Game Announces Changes to Sport Fishing Regulations in Wrangell Narrows/Blind Slough for 2024

Petersburg, AK – In light of declining king salmon returns, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has announced revised sport fishing regulations for the Wrangell Narrows/Blind Slough Terminal Harvest Area, effective June 15 through July 31, 2024.

Due to significantly low projections for king salmon in the region, the ADF&G has implemented a series of measures aimed at conserving the species. In the salt waters of Wrangell Narrows, anglers will now face stricter limits, with a bag and possession limit of one king salmon of any size. Nonresidents will also be subject to new annual limits within this area.

In the fresh waters of Blind Slough, a complete closure to king salmon sport fishing has been instituted. Anglers will not be able to target, retain, or possess king salmon, and any accidentally caught king salmon must be released immediately. Furthermore, the use of unbaited artificial lures will be mandatory when fishing for other species.

The forecast for the 2024 Crystal Lake Hatchery king salmon return to this terminal area is estimated at 1,400 adult fish, marking a notably weak run. These regulatory changes are primarily aimed at achieving broodstock goals while allowing for very limited harvest opportunities, which are crucial for sustaining the salmon population in future years.

ADF&G officials stress that continued monitoring of in-season information will guide any further necessary actions. This proactive management strategy is essential to ensure the long-term health of king salmon stocks in the Wrangell Narrows and Blind Slough areas. Anglers are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to the new regulations to support conservation efforts.
