Bernadette Wilson Enters Alaska Governor Race, Focuses on Energy and Election Reform

In her first interview since announcing her candidacy for Alaska governor, Bernadette Wilson, a former radio host and conservative figure, discussed key issues and her experience with the Trump administration on energy development. A lifelong Alaskan born on the Kenai Peninsula and raised in Anchorage, Wilson is a political outsider, though her family has a notable political history, including her great-uncle Wally Hickel, a former governor.

Wilson, the owner of a garbage company, touted her entrepreneurial background and connection to state politics. “I’m celebrating nine years in business,” she stated, emphasizing her innovative spirit and commitment to Alaska. She is critical of ranked choice voting, which she argues disenfranchises voters, particularly after its association with the election of Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola, blaming it for confusion among constituents. “It absolutely has got to go. That is mission-critical,” Wilson declared.

Energy development is another focal point; Wilson sees potential collaboration with the Trump administration to spearhead a domestic energy renaissance, describing Alaska’s capacity to lead the nation in this sector. “Under the Biden administration, Alaska was sanctioned more times than the country of Iran,” she noted, advocating for a more robust energy strategy.

On trade relations, Wilson expressed the need for improved cross-border infrastructure with Canada, emphasizing the importance of projects such as railroads. “Getting a railroad through Canada would definitely be a great No. 1 priority,” she remarked, illustrating her strategic vision for Alaska.
Wilson faces competition from Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom and State Sen. Click Bishop in the upcoming 2026 election.
