Sport Fishing for King Salmon Opens in Ketchikan Hatchery Areas
Ketchikan, AK – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Sport Fish has announced new regulations for sport fishing for king salmon in three hatchery areas around Ketchikan for the 2025 season.
The designated areas include Carroll Inlet, Thomas Basin, and Mountain Point, where the bag and possession limit for all anglers is set at one king salmon measuring 28 inches or greater. Nonresident anglers are also restricted to an annual limit of one king salmon of the same size.
Key areas of regulation include:
- Carroll Inlet: Fishing is permitted north of the latitude of Nigelius Point (55° 33.50′ N, 131° 21.14′ W).
- Thomas Basin: From the Stedman Street Bridge to the breakwater.
- Mountain Point Area: All waters of George and Carroll Inlets are open, lying north of specified latitude and longitude points.
These regulations arise from anticipated returns of hatchery-produced king salmon from the Deer Mountain and Whitman Lake Hatcheries, as well as from Carroll Inlet’s remote release program. The projected surplus of hatchery fish will enable sport anglers to harvest more salmon while supporting local fisheries.
Anglers should note that until early June, certain saltwaters outside these areas are closed to king salmon retention. To ensure compliance, fishermen are urged to be mindful of regulations, especially when transitioning between various fishing locations.
