MONROE COUNTY – In a delicious celebration of National Hamburger Month, readers have voted Verna’s Tavern, located at 7900 N. Dixie Highway, as the best burger destination in Monroe County, securing 394 votes (25.26%) in a recent poll. Close competitors included The Dive Bar at 142 N. Monroe St. with 387 votes (24.81%) and Larson’s Bar at 713 Stone St. with 288 votes (18.46%).
Renowned for its half-pound burgers and extensive beer selection, Verna’s Tavern, operated by Kelly Sovey, has been a staple for 88 years. The tavern’s signature offering is the Verna Burger, which features fresh ingredients and is served on Saturdays. Other popular menu items include the "Works" burger, topped with Swiss and American cheese, mushrooms, bacon, and fried onions, as well as unique options like the Yum Yum burger, which combines peanut butter, bacon, cheddar cheese, and barbecue sauce.
