Bernadette Wilson Announces Candidacy for Alaska Governor
An Anchorage business owner, Republican campaigner, and former talk radio host, Bernadette Wilson, has officially launched her campaign for Alaska’s governor. Announcing her candidacy Tuesday with a video from the steps of the Alaska Capitol, Wilson has filed a letter of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission. She joins fellow Republicans Click Bishop and Nancy Dahlstrom, who recently declared their own campaigns.
In a Juneau interview, Wilson expressed her disappointment with Alaska’s current condition and her concerns about the future for her children. “I see the opportunity that Alaska has here, but I also see the lack of leadership, the lack of vision,” she stated, echoing the frustrations of many Alaskans.
Born on the Kenai Peninsula and raised in Anchorage, Wilson is the great-niece of former Governor Wally Hickel. As a parent to three children and owner of Denali Disposal, a trash collection service, her ties to the community run deep. Her experience in politics is extensive, having worked on several campaigns, including that of Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson and past ballot measures.
Wilson also hosted a talk radio show and organized protests against Anchorage’s COVID-19 measures in 2020. As well as her gubernatorial bid, she is campaigning for a ballot measure to repeal ranked choice voting in Alaska.
Though she has never held public office, Wilson cites Ronald Reagan as a precedent for her own candidacy. Critiquing the current administration, she questions the lack of major infrastructure projects and educational improvements. “We’re at the bottom of education… I don’t think there is a whole lot there to continue,” she remarked.
Wilson is determined to actively engage with Alaskans as she campaigns, stating she plans to listen to their concerns throughout the upcoming election cycle.
