Alaska Small Business Outlook Declines Amid Rising Costs and Political Uncertainty
A recent report from the Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC) reveals a concerning shift in the challenges facing small businesses statewide in early 2025. The findings, derived from the SBDC’s 2025 Quick Pulse Survey, indicate that inflation, rising operating costs, and political uncertainty have taken precedence over previous concerns like workforce issues and customer acquisition.
Approximately 29% of the 958 businesses surveyed in 2024 participated in this follow-up survey, which was prompted by changing business conditions. Notably, political uncertainty has emerged as a significant challenge for the first time in the survey’s eight-year history, surpassing even the crises experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The report emphasizes that Alaska’s small businesses are shifting their focus from growth to economic survival amid escalating costs linked to the volatile global market. After four years of increasing optimism, the percentage of owners expecting a favorable financial outlook has dramatically decreased from 60% at the end of 2024 to just 46% in early 2025, marking the lowest level of confidence since the pandemic.
In a notable change, the number of businesses seeking outside capital has risen from 32% to 36%, with many viewing this as a defensive strategy to sustain operations rather than an opportunity for growth. Alaska’s unique economic challenges, including high shipping costs and a declining population of potential workers, continue to complicate the landscape for small businesses.
Hiring remains a significant hurdle, as 22% of businesses report difficulties in attracting qualified applicants, exacerbated by compensation issues. As Alaska’s working-age population dwindles, the urgency for skilled labor intensifies.
The SBDC underscores a crucial period of uncertainty for Alaska’s small businesses, urging a reevaluation of strategies in the face of these mounting challenges.
