Alaska Honors Fallen Officers During Police Week
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The week of May 11 to May 17 marks Police Week, highlighted by National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15. Capt. Moose Sims of the Alaska State Troopers emphasized the significance of this event during an interview with Alaska’s News Source.
Capt. Sims underscored the importance of honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. “I have friends and mentors that have lost their lives … and given the ultimate sacrifice,” he stated, reflecting on the 24,000 names etched on the memorial wall in Washington, D.C.
He urged Alaskans to recognize the dedication of police officers: “We want to protect, we want to serve… We go in knowing that we could have to pay the ultimate sacrifice.” His heartfelt message reminds the community of the risks law enforcement faces daily.
Across the state, various events are taking place to honor fallen law enforcement officers. A memorial ceremony in North Pole will pay tribute to 72 officers who died in the line of duty in Alaska. Additionally, Juneau is set to hold a police memorial ceremony at noon on Friday at the Evergreen Cemetery, located at 601 Seater Street.
Anchorage will also observe the week with a ceremony on Tuesday, May 20, at 3 p.m., to be held at the Alaska State Crime Detection Laboratory, 4805 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.
