PGIMER Observes Celiac Disease Day with Vital Awareness Initiative
Chandigarh, India – The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) recently marked Celiac Disease Day with a comprehensive awareness program aimed at promoting early diagnosis, family engagement, and lifestyle transformation for managing this chronic condition.
Organized by the Division of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the initiative was spearheaded by Dr. Sadhna Lal, Head of the Department. She emphasized the importance of understanding Celiac Disease, stating, “Celiac is not a disease in the traditional sense—it’s a long-term commitment to a new way of life.” Dr. Lal highlighted PGIMER’s pioneering role in Celiac Disease treatment in India, noting that the institute has treated nearly 18,000 patients since the 1980s, making it one of the largest clinics for this condition globally.
Despite these efforts, Dr. Lal pointed out significant challenges in disease recognition. “Celiac Disease is like an iceberg; many cases go undiagnosed due to vague symptoms,” she said. Notably, many affected children exhibit normal growth, complicating timely diagnosis. Researchers at PGIMER estimate that approximately one in 100 children in North India may be living with undetected Celiac Disease.
Dr. Lal cautioned that untreated gluten consumption can inflict irreversible damage to internal organs. To assist parents, she provided practical advice, encouraging them to ensure their children eat breakfast regularly, foster disciplined eating habits, and actively involve kids in learning about their condition.
The day-long event, held at PGIMER’s APC Auditorium, included interactive sessions featuring paediatric gastroenterologists, nutritionists, and counselors, further emphasizing the importance of family support and education in managing Celiac Disease effectively.
