Alaska Breweries Unite for Legislative Change
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) – Beer enthusiasts across Alaska may have noticed a trend: multiple breweries are releasing beers with the same name. This initiative is part of the “Tap Into Change” movement, featuring 16 breweries statewide, aiming to ease stringent regulations that currently govern the industry.
Stephanie Haskins, Executive Director of the Brewers Guild of Alaska, explained, “The focus of this project is to be a fundraiser for the Brewers Guild of Alaska.” Beyond fundraising, the initiative promotes networking and education in Alaska’s craft brewing sector while advocating for legislative reform.
Haskins highlighted the challenges faced by smaller breweries, often operating as family-run businesses with restrictive laws limiting their operational capabilities. These laws include tight serving limits and restrictions on the number of live events each brewery can host annually. “For those with these manufacturer retail licenses, they can do up to four a year with the Title 4 rewrite that went into effect in January of 2024,” she noted.
The funds raised through the Tap Into Change initiative aim to alleviate some of the complexities associated with organizing live events. Haskins emphasized the success breweries have experienced by focusing on community engagement and suggested that increasing event-hosting flexibility would enhance the local scene: “Making it easier for breweries to supplement their businesses with their live music privileges a few times a year would only contribute to a more wholesome community,” she added.
