Member of N. Irish Rap Group Kneecap Charged with Terrorism for Displaying Hezbollah Flag

Liam O’Hanna, a 27-year-old rapper from Northern Ireland known as Mo Chara, has been charged with a terrorism offense after allegedly displaying the flag of Hezbollah, a group designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including the UK. The London Metropolitan Police launched an investigation following an online video showing O’Hanna at a venue north of London on November 21. The charge is based on a provision in UK terrorism law that prohibits showing such flags in a way that suggests support for recognized terrorist groups.

Hezbollah, which is aligned with Hamas, has significantly escalated violence in the region since the October 7 attack on Israel that killed over 1,200 people and resulted in hostages being taken. The resulting conflict has claimed over 53,000 lives in Gaza, with continued military actions exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. O’Hanna, in a previous interview, expressed a desire not to regret his inaction regarding the “Palestinian genocide,” reinforcing his commitment to speaking out about the conflict.

The hip-hop trio Kneecap has faced backlash and described the criticism of their views on the Gaza war as part of a “coordinated smear campaign” aimed at silencing dissent. They argue that accusations of antisemitism are used to deflect attention from the ongoing violence. After performing at Coachella with a provocative message about the conflict, organizers of the Tribe of Nova music festival criticized their stance as offensive, particularly in light of the recent violence.

O’Hanna is set to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 18.
