AKPIRG Welcomes New Executive Director Julia Hnilicka
The Alaska Public Interest Research Group (AKPIRG) is entering a new chapter with the appointment of Julia Hnilicka as its next executive director. Raised in Nenana, Hnilicka’s connection to Alaska’s unique challenges is evidenced through her upbringing as the daughter of a tugboat captain and an educator. She has dedicated her career to bridging policy and community, most recently serving as the Alaska state director for USDA Rural Development under the Biden administration.
“I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to step into leadership at AKPIRG,” Hnilicka expressed. “It is a passionate, community-led organization, working for the betterment of all Alaskans. The values at AKPIRG align with my own, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their trust in this awesome responsibility.”
For over 50 years, AKPIRG has been a champion for transparency, consumer rights, and equity across Alaska. Under Hnilicka’s leadership, the organization aims to expand its reach and continue advocating for a more just and accountable state.
The board selected Hnilicka after a comprehensive hiring process conducted in partnership with Nokomis Strategies. She will collaborate with outgoing Executive Director Veri di Suvero, who will step down on June 5 after seven years marked by significant growth for the organization. Di Suvero expressed, “This role has been the honor of a lifetime. I’m thrilled to pass the torch to Julia. She’s a powerful, grounded leader with a deep commitment to Alaska and a clear vision for its future.”
Board Chair Sydney Scout praised Hnilicka’s leadership abilities: “Julia is a dedicated, aligned, and tenacious leader, and I have complete confidence in her ability to take AKPIRG into an exciting new chapter.”
