Zackery Brandon Barfield, a 31-year-old man from Florida, was sentenced to 30 days in prison and a year of supervised release for shooting and poisoning dolphins. The crimes occurred during his charter fishing operations in Panama City between 2022 and 2023. Prosecutors revealed that Barfield shot at five dolphins, killing at least one, after becoming frustrated with them eating his clients’ catches, particularly red snapper.
Barfield’s violent actions took place while children and fishermen were present on his boats. He also resorted to using poisoned bait, specifically infusing baitfish with the pesticide methomyl, to target the dolphins. This poisoning affected an estimated 24 to 70 dolphins across multiple outings. Federal law enforcement, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), launched an investigation after receiving a tip about his activities.
Despite knowing the regulations protecting dolphins under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Barfield admitted in court to illegally taking marine mammals and using a prohibited pesticide. His actions were particularly egregious as he recognized the toxicity of methomyl yet continued to use it for months.
Upon pleading guilty to three counts, including illegal taking of a marine mammal, Barfield’s shotgun used in the shootings was seized and will be forfeited under his plea agreement. Judge Michael J. Frank imposed a 30-day sentence for each count, to be served concurrently, along with a $51,000 fine. Barfield’s case highlights a concerning disregard for marine wildlife and environmental regulations.
