Rice, often deemed a simple staple, can be intimidating for many home cooks. Yet, new insights are redefining how we approach this essential dish. Renowned food blogger Jem Mantiri of The Fruity Jem shares her innovative pasta cooking method, designed to ease the anxiety of grain preparation.

Traditionally, the rules of cooking rice insist on never lifting the lid and meticulously measuring water. However, Mantiri suggests that occasionally lifting the lid to assess progress can actually promote smoother cooking. Additionally, by treating grains like pasta—boiling them in abundant salted water—cooks can simplify the process, avoiding the stress of exact ratios and stovetop burns.

“This method is fantastic for beginners or those uncertain about cooking new grains,” Mantiri explains. It is especially effective for large batches, where rice cookers can fall short in capacity. Instead of worrying about measurements, the pasta method allows greater control over texture, making it ideal for gatherings.

To execute this technique, bring salted water to a boil, add the uncooked grains, and monitor them closely. Unlike traditional methods, there’s no need to rinse beforehand, and a splash of vinegar can enhance fluffiness. Cooking times vary: white rice takes about 10-15 minutes, while more robust grains like wild rice may take up to 45 minutes.

Once cooked, drain the grains and rinse if serving cold. For warm dishes, return them briefly to low heat to evaporate excess moisture. While this method is perfect for dishes like rice salads, it may not suit every recipe, particularly those requiring sticky rice or precise textures.
