Thunderstorms Affect Southcentral and Interior Alaska

ANCHORAGE, AK (Alaska’s News Source) – Thunderstorms continued to develop from the Interior to Southcentral Alaska for the second consecutive day, resulting in over 700 lightning strikes. The storm activity, which began on Saturday with 100 strikes, surged to more than 600 on Sunday, bringing rainfall to the Anchorage bowl early in the day.

By late Sunday evening, most lightning and shower activity had subsided in Southcentral, although storms persisted in the Interior, particularly to the north and west of the Alaska Range. Forecasts indicate that the Interior will experience more thunderstorms with lightning and rain on both Monday and Tuesday. Residents are advised to monitor live radar and subscribe to lightning alerts via the free Alaska’s News Source Weather App.

As for Southcentral, drier and mostly clear conditions are anticipated to start the week, although a rain band is expected to arrive mid-afternoon. Showers are likely around midday, followed by a return to dry weather in the evening and extending through Tuesday morning.

In the Southeast and Southwest regions, rain showers will persist throughout the week, with heavy rainfall predicted near Ketchikan on Monday night and Tuesday. While no significant storms are expected next week, a deep trough of low pressure will maintain on-shore flow across the southern part of the state, leading to partly to mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers. High temperatures will remain close to the seasonal norms for late May.
