Israeli Airstrikes Claim 52 Lives in Gaza, Including 36 at School-turned-Shelter, According to Medics

In a recent airstrike, Israeli forces targeted a school in Gaza, claiming it was used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad for militant operations. The attack occurred while civilians were asleep, resulting in fires that destroyed belongings and tragically led to casualties, including charred remains being recovered by rescuers. The military justified the strike by stating it aimed at a command center crucial for the militants’ intelligence-gathering efforts. Meanwhile, another attack in Jabalya claimed the lives of 16 family members, highlighting the escalating violence in the region.

In response, Palestinian militants launched three projectiles toward Israel; however, two fell short and one was intercepted. The ongoing conflict has already resulted in significant casualties, with Hamas-led militants responsible for approximately 1,200 deaths, primarily civilians, in a prior attack. Among those affected, 251 individuals were taken hostage, although many have since been released amid ceasefire agreements and rescues.

The intense military offensive has devastated large swaths of Gaza, rendering numerous neighborhoods uninhabitable. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals have sought refuge in schools and overcrowded tent camps. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, Israel’s retaliatory actions have claimed around 54,000 Palestinian lives, with over half identified as women and children. However, the ministry does not differentiate between combatants and non-combatants in its casualties report. The brutal cycle of violence continues, significantly impacting the civilian population amid claims and counterclaims from both sides regarding responsibility for the ensuing humanitarian crisis.
