Search Continues for Missing Man After Boat Sinks in Mekoryuk

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Alaska State Troopers are currently searching for a 72-year-old man who remains missing after a boat sank off the coast of Mekoryuk, located on the north side of Nunivak Island. Troopers received a distress call around 9 p.m. Monday regarding a 10-foot Ocean Pro boat carrying three men that capsized in rough waters.

While one man was successfully rescued, another managed to swim to shore and was later taken to a local clinic for evaluation. The missing individual has been identified as Samuel Shavings, aged 72. The other two men involved in the incident are aged 19 and 65, according to an Alaska State Troopers spokesperson.

Search efforts made overnight included two local boats, along with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard. On Tuesday morning, the Rescue Coordination Center is set to deploy a C-130 aircraft to aid in the search, while a Coast Guard vessel has already been routed to the area to support ongoing recovery efforts.

The situation remains critical as authorities continue their extensive search for Shavings. The community is hopeful for a positive outcome as efforts intensify in the region’s challenging conditions.
