Marine Claims He Subdued ‘Disruptive’ Passenger Attempting to Open Aircraft Exit Door

Jody Armentrout, a 20-year veteran of the Marines stationed in Japan, was traveling on All Nippon Airways Flight 114 from Tokyo to Houston when he noticed a man behaving suspiciously. After observing him move between bathrooms and pace the aisle, Armentrout’s instincts kicked in when he saw the man eyeing the emergency exit nearby. Becoming concerned for the safety of fellow passengers, including infants, Armentrout positioned himself to block the exit. When the man attempted to force the door open, Armentrout intervened, tackling him to the ground with the help of another passenger. Flight attendants provided zip ties to secure the man to his seat.

The airplane was diverted to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where police took custody of the unruly passenger, who was later evaluated and found to be experiencing a medical crisis. Armentrout received thanks from other passengers for his quick action. The flight, however, continued to experience difficulty; upon landing, another passenger frustrated with the diversion punched a bathroom door, prompting their removal from the aircraft.

Eventually arriving in Houston, Armentrout expressed relief and acknowledged the stressful nature of the flight, emphasizing the importance of situational awareness in today’s world. He plans to return to Japan shortly, feeling a sense of anxiety about traveling again, but remains committed to encouraging others to stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings in all situations.
