Tragic Incident on the Sterling Highway
A driver was tragically discovered deceased on Tuesday following reports of a vehicle submerged in the Anchor River on the southern Kenai Peninsula, authorities confirmed.
Alaska State Troopers received notification around 7:45 a.m. regarding an overturned vehicle in the river near Mile 161 of the Sterling Highway, situated between Anchor Point and Homer. Upon arrival at the scene, troopers found the adult driver inside the vehicle.
Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been traveling northbound on the highway in the early hours, leaving the road, hitting a guardrail, and ultimately rolling into the river at approximately 1:15 a.m.
The body of the driver has been transported to the State Medical Examiner Office, where efforts to positively identify the individual are underway. Authorities stated that the driver’s identity would be made public following notification of next of kin.
In light of the investigation and recovery efforts, the Sterling Highway experienced intermittent closures for about two hours. Western Emergency Services, which oversees the southern peninsula area, later announced that the highway reopened in both directions shortly after 1 p.m.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the perils of driving and the importance of road safety. Further updates will follow as information becomes available.
