Anchorage Athletes Shine on National Stage
In a remarkable showcase of athletic talent, Anchorage’s Jeremy Swayman played a pivotal role in leading Team USA to gold at the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. The starting goalie for the Boston Bruins, Swayman delivered an impressive performance, making 25 saves to secure a 1-0 victory over Switzerland, culminating a perfect 7-0 run in the tournament. Swayman expressed his gratitude on social media, highlighting the significance of this victory: “We did it, the wait is over.”
Meanwhile, Soldotna’s Adarra Hagelund made headlines by clinching the national title in women’s high jump at the NAIA track and field championships in Indiana, clearing a height of 5 feet, 9 inches. Fairbanks’ Eliyah Dominique also defended his title in the men’s 200-meter race at the Northwest Athletic Conference championships, finishing with a time of 21.93 seconds.
In bowling, Anchorage’s Maia Struble finished as the runner-up in the U22 Queens national bowling tournament. Her journey included a notable victory over former U18 national champion Karina Capron, showcasing her skill and determination to exceed her own expectations.
Additionally, the Anchorage Wolverines’ forward Duke Gentzler has committed to play at the United States Air Force Academy, marking another success for the team. Head Coach Nick Walters praised Gentzler’s unique blend of skill and physicality.
Another highlight from the weekend was a record-setting boys’ 4×100 relay team from Soldotna at the Region III championships, along with strong performances from local soccer and baseball teams.
In officiating, Juneau’s Robert Sims was recognized as the 2024-25 Alaska Sports Official of the Year for his exemplary service across multiple sports.
