Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recently escalated tensions between Russia and the U.S., hinting at the potential for World War III amidst increasing discord over the Ukraine conflict. His comments were a response to former President Donald Trump’s critique of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who Trump claimed was “playing with fire” as attacks on Ukraine persisted. Medvedev cautioned Trump about the gravity of the situation, stating, “I only know of one REALLY BAD thing — WWIII.”
Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, labeled Medvedev’s remarks as “reckless,” emphasizing that they are unworthy of a world power and warning that Russia is inflaming fears of a global conflict. Despite Trump’s earlier intentions to foster a truce in what has become a years-long war, his relationship with Putin has soured, leading him to label Putin “crazy” following significant strikes on Ukraine.
While Putin has implied the potential use of nuclear weapons since the war’s inception in February 2022, he has not invoked the idea of World War III. Russia is reportedly developing a memorandum outlining its demands for peace negotiations with Ukraine, which include contentious issues such as Ukraine’s NATO ambitions and territorial claims.
In Ukraine, attacks continued with reports of casualties from missile strikes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is slated to meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss defense strategies, including increased drone and missile production, following Germany’s decision to lift restrictions on military support to Ukraine. The Kremlin criticized this development as “extremely dangerous,” contending that it undermines the fragile peace processes currently in play.
