Annual Senior Fun Fest Celebrates Older Americans Month with a Rodeo Roundup Theme
HUNTSVILLE, AL – Approximately 850 seniors from northeast Alabama gathered at the Alabama A&M Agribition Center on May 13 for TARCOG’s Annual Senior Fun Fest, marking Older Americans Month. The vibrant event featured line dancing, live music, games, and a plethora of informative displays, all under the theme "Rodeo Roundup." Many attendees embraced the cowboy spirit, donning stylish western attire.
Among the highlights was the Western Showdown Talent Show, where 87-year-old Wilma Shortt from Scottsboro captivated the audience with her rendition of Hank Williams’ classic "Hey, Good Lookin’." Although she didn’t take home the talent crown, Shortt cherished the experience of representing Jackson County. “Just being amongst everybody has been fun,” she expressed, embodying the day’s spirit of camaraderie.
Mary Ruth Yon, 70, also from Scottsboro, shared her enthusiasm for the festivities. A regular at the event, she praised it as a wonderful opportunity for social engagement and learning. “I encourage others to come,” she said. “It gets you out of the house, you learn a lot of things, meet a lot of people, play games, and it is a lot of fun.”
Eddie Justice, 76, echoed similar sentiments, enjoying the entertainment and social interactions throughout the day.
The event was supported by several local agencies, including DeKalb and Jackson County Councils on Aging, Limestone County Council on Aging, Huntsville-Madison County Council on Aging, Marshall County, the Alabama Council on Aging, and the Alabama Department of Senior Services. The Annual Senior Fun Fest continues to prove a vital platform for celebrating the contributions and vitality of seniors in the community.
