Trump administration’s proposal to cut Essential Air Service in Alaska faces strong local opposition.

Alaskan Communities Rally Against Proposed Cuts to Essential Air Service

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Essential Air Service (EAS), vital for flights connecting small Alaskan communities to larger hub airports, faces significant budget cuts proposed by the Trump Administration. The recommended reduction of over $300 million would cut the program’s budget by more than half, provoking concern among residents reliant on these subsidies for essential travel.

Caitlin McKinstry from Cordova shared her apprehension: “I first heard of the cuts… We’ve been discussing it since January,” given the lack of obstetric services in Cordova. “Expectant mothers have to fly to Anchorage to deliver their children.” She emphasized that EAS flights are crucial not just for transporting people but also for delivering groceries and essential goods. “A gallon of milk is about $7.60… Our prices are already pretty high, and they’re just going to skyrocket if we lose those subsidies,” she added.

While the proposed cuts may not eliminate EAS routes completely, they could lead airlines to opt out due to lack of financial support. Community members like McKinstry are eager for clarity on the future of these routes and seek backing from lawmakers.

Support for the EAS has been voiced by Alaska’s congressional delegation. Senator Lisa Murkowski stressed that EAS is a “lifeline for many Alaskans,” while Senator Dan Sullivan labeled it a “necessity” for communities off the road system. Congressman Nick Begich acknowledged the unique needs of Alaskans and pledged continued advocacy.

As the fate of the proposed budget cuts rests in Congress’s hands, Alaskans like McKinstry worry about a potential exodus from their communities due to rising living costs. “People might start moving away… We’re already in a housing crisis,” she concluded.
