A Shout-Out to Two of Alaska’s Top Young Spellers!
Maria Hernandez-Zamora, a seventh grader at Homer Middle School, and Elden Wier from Cyberlynx School have represented Alaska in this week’s Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C.
At just 13 years old, both spellers showcased their talent and hard work by advancing through the first two rounds of the competition. They then faced the critical written test in Round 3, where a score of at least 13 was necessary to progress further. While Maria and Elden performed admirably, this is unfortunately where their journeys concluded.
They tied for 100th place out of 243 contenders—a respectable achievement considering the fierce competition they faced. The finals are on schedule for Friday, and excitement is building as top spellers continue to battle it out for the championship.
