The WNBA has concluded its investigation into allegations of racist fan behavior during a game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever in Indianapolis, stating it could not substantiate the claims. The investigation involved gathering information from fans, team and arena staff, as well as conducting an audio and video review of the game. Chicago Sky CEO Adam Fox expressed appreciation for the swift action taken by the league and the Fever in addressing the matter, emphasizing the league’s commitment to eliminating hate at events.
The investigation focused on claims that racist comments were directed at Sky player Angel Reese during the game, which the Fever won decisively, 93-58. While Reese dismissed questions about the investigation, asserting her focus on the game after a challenging start for the Sky, first-year coach Tyler Marsh echoed her sentiment, emphasizing the need for a safe environment for all players.
Reese and Caitlin Clark, the Fever’s standout rookie, faced off once again, highlighting their ongoing rivalry. Clark mentioned she did not hear any racist remarks but acknowledged the loud atmosphere of the arena and trusted that the league would handle the situation appropriately. Both teams, along with the WNBA Players Association, supported the investigation, which ultimately found no substantiated evidence of misconduct.
Indiana’s Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO Mel Raines also released a statement reaffirming their commitment to a welcoming environment in their arena. Throughout this incident, Reese noted the support she received from the league, underlining the broader implications of such behavior and affirming a collective stance against hate in the WNBA.
