Tragic Discovery: Remains of Missing Texas Family Found in Alaska
Almost 10 months after a Texas family’s boat capsized off the coast of Homer, Alaska, human remains have been discovered at the bottom of the bay. In August 2024, the U.S. Coast Guard initiated a search for the missing boaters but suspended operations due to lack of sightings.
David and Mary Maynard from Troy, Texas, along with their two sons—11-year-old Colton and 8-year-old Brantley—vanished when their 28-foot aluminum boat capsized approximately 16 miles west of Homer. The tragedy struck when the family was vacationing in Alaska.
The Alaska State Troopers reported that three private companies—Support Vessels of Alaska, Vision Subsea, and Benthic Geoscience Inc—joined in the search efforts. These companies utilized advanced tools to locate the missing vessel. In early May, the teams successfully found the boat submerged in 180 feet of water and identified it using a remotely operated vehicle, discovering potential human remains onboard.
Since then, divers have recovered three sets of remains and have sent them to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and autopsy. The Alaska Wildlife Troopers expressed gratitude to all organizations involved in the recovery operation.
A GoFundMe page established while the family was missing highlighted the profound impact the Maynards had on the community, emphasizing their laughter, love, and family-oriented connections. “The void they leave behind is indescribable,” the page stated, calling for community unity in remembering them.
