Press Release: Innovative Device from Case Western Reserve University Enhances CAR T Cell Therapy Accessibility

CLEVELAND—A groundbreaking new device developed by researchers at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) aims to revolutionize CAR T cell immunotherapy, potentially making this life-saving treatment more affordable and broadly available. CAR T cell therapy uses a patient’s own modified immune cells to target and eliminate blood cancers like lymphoma and leukemia, though the process of harvesting T cells has traditionally been costly and complex.

The innovative device, named CAPGLO (Capture and Glow), employs a magnetic field to efficiently isolate T cells from a patient’s blood sample and visualize them using fluorescent tags. This technology could dramatically reduce the cost associated with T cell collection, potentially transforming immunotherapy from a last-resort option to a first-line treatment. “By bringing the cost down to a few hundred dollars, we can ensure that this treatment reaches more patients,” stated Susann Brady-Kalnay, a CWRU cell biologist involved in the project.

CAPGLO is designed to require only about half a pint of blood—similar to a standard blood donation—making it significantly less invasive than traditional methods, which necessitate substantial blood removal and costly centrifuge equipment. The T cells that are collected may then be processed into CAR T cells within a rapid timeframe of less than 24 hours.

This research team, which includes physicist Robert Brown and immunologist David Wald, has received support from the CWRU Technology Validation and Startup Fund to explore this promising technology. The goal is to optimize the T cell isolation process, potentially paving the way for greater equity in cancer treatment access.
