Dimond High’s Avrey Campbell Triumphs in Dual Sports Showdown
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Avrey Campbell, a senior at Dimond High School, faced a longstanding scheduling conflict in her dual athletic commitments to soccer and track. This challenge culminated on May 31, marking an exhilarating conclusion to her high school sports career.
At 4 p.m., Campbell showcased her exceptional talent by claiming the Division I 300-meter hurdle state title, finishing in an impressive 47.10 seconds. However, the celebration was brief.
“I started my day early at Dimond,” she recounted. “I watched my sister run her 4×800 relay and then competed in the 4×200, where we secured second place, followed by my win in the 300 hurdles.”
Immediately after her victory, Campbell changed into warmups, packed her belongings, and headed for a quick transfer to soccer. Just 30 minutes after her track success, she found herself en route to Wasilla for a crucial state championship soccer match.
“I went straight from the track to the car and took off on a plane,” Campbell explained. A Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, facilitated by a family friend, helped her arrive just 10 minutes late for the soccer game. “I thought I would miss the first half, but I made it pretty much on time,” she noted.
Though Dimond lost the championship match 4-0 to South Anchorage, Campbell’s dedication and versatility shone through. “It just means a lot to be such a big part of two teams,” she expressed, emphasizing her love for her school and teammates.
Ultimately, Campbell committed to running track for the University of Alaska Anchorage, a decision she described as incredibly challenging. “It took me forever, and I cried about it a lot, but UAA ended up being the best fit for me,” she said.
Reflecting on her remarkable day, Campbell stated, “I think it is such a unique experience, and I love Alaska and every little unique quirk we have here.”
