Ekinops FlexRate Technology Fuels Upgrade of Caribbean Subsea Cable

Ekinops Partners with Global Caribbean Network to Enhance Subsea Capacity

Ekinops, a prominent player in optical transport and network access solutions, has announced a significant upgrade to Global Caribbean Network’s (GCN) subsea cable infrastructure. GCN, which provides wholesale capacity to telecommunications companies across the Caribbean, has integrated the Ekinops360 Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) platform equipped with FlexRate™ technology into its existing network.

GCN operates a vital cable system in the Guadeloupe region, covering critical routes lacking other connectivity options. Given the long distances involved—over 350 kilometers—and demanding optical requirements, the company sought a solution that could support bandwidth services ranging from 10G to 100G.

With the help of Ekinops’ 400FRS04-SF modules, Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs), and low-noise amplifiers, GCN can now deliver the necessary bandwidth for regional service providers, enhancing internet accessibility for local populations. The upgrade comes as part of a public service delegation contract with the Guadeloupe regional council, which mandates that GCN return control of the cable system to the regional government after a specified period. This necessitated a modernization of infrastructure to ensure compliance and support for future high-capacity demands.

Axel Adenet, GCN’s Chief Operations Officer, expressed satisfaction with Ekinops’ capability and support throughout the upgrade process. "Choosing Ekinops was pivotal not only for their technical expertise but also because it allowed us to partner with a French technology firm, which is critical in ensuring national sovereignty over our strategic data flows," Adenet stated.

Frank Dedobbeleer, Ekinops’ Chief Revenue Officer for EMEA & APAC, highlighted the flexibility of the Ekinops360 platform, noting its suitability for diverse applications, including subsea deployments, showcasing the company’s significant expertise in this domain.
