Artists Transform Oyster Shells Into Captivating Installation at IGCA
Anchorage artists Joshua Demain and Yulia Kalagaeva have unveiled an extraordinary installation, “Obsessions,” at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art, showcasing thousands of oyster shells collected from local restaurants. This immersive exhibit will be on display until June 27.
Kalagaeva noted the rapid collection process, stating, “A month and a half, and we were up to 3,000 or so.” The duo began seeking used oyster shells from restaurants such as F Street and Kincaid Grill last November, eventually amassing a staggering amount. “Then it became insanity,” Kalagaeva remarked, as the restaurant staff eagerly contributed to their artistic endeavor.
The shells, cleaned and coated in varnish, now adorn a third of the gallery walls and are piled onto furniture, creating a stunning visual impact alongside charcoal and graphite drawings that depict both artists. The collaborative duo, known as 4and2is6, mentioned that their obsession with art has strengthened their bond since their days as art students at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Inspired by their shared experiences and memories, they combined their passion for art and food, creating over 450 ceramic sculptures for an earlier market. Kalagaeva explained, “Everyone had a relationship with an oyster.” This approach to art encourages deeper engagement with the community, as they aim to explore meaningful connections rather than mere themes.
“Obsessions” is joined by two other exhibitions, including Graham Dane’s colorful sculptures and Ted Kincaid’s vibrant paintings, making this an impressive event in the Anchorage art scene. The installations can be viewed from Thursday to Sunday at 427 D St. For more information, visit igcaalaska.org.
