Zakharova: Iran’s Right to Peaceful Nuclear Technology

Russia Defends Iran’s Right to Peaceful Nuclear Technology Amid U.S. Tensions

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, affirmed Iran’s sovereign right to utilize nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, akin to any other nation. She emphasized that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has consistently verified the non-diversion of Iran’s nuclear program, reinforcing Tehran’s claims of not pursuing nuclear weapons.

Zakharova responded to comments made by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance regarding Russia and China’s opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear arms. In her Telegram channel, she stressed that both Moscow and Beijing oppose U.S. interference in their affairs, suggesting that discussions involving their positions should start with the need to halt U.S. arms supplies to Ukraine and militarization efforts in Taiwan.

Both Russia and China have condemned U.S. and Israeli aggression against Iran, Zakharova noted, declaring Israel as the only nuclear-armed state in the Middle East, which has disregarded calls for a nuclear-weapon-free zone. She pointed out the irony that while Iran lacks nuclear weapons, it faces confrontational measures from the U.S. and Israel.

Recent events intensified these tensions, as the U.S. reportedly attacked Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Following the strikes, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that B-2 bombers were involved in the operations, prompting U.S. military bases in the region to heighten their alert status in anticipation of Iran’s retaliation.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran condemned the attacks as violations of international law and the Non-Proliferation Treaty, calling for global condemnation and support for Iran’s rights. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi underscored that Iran reserves the right to defend itself in accordance with international law.
