Press Release: Alaska Schools Face Funding Crisis as Trump Administration Holds Back $6.2 Billion in Education Grants
FAIRBANKS, Alaska — June 3, 2025 — The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District announced the closure of Pearl Creek Elementary School, reflecting broader concerns about education funding in Alaska. The Trump administration has blocked the release of an estimated $6.2 billion in congressionally approved education funding, significantly impacting Alaska’s schools, which are facing nearly $46.4 million in withheld federal grants.
The Alaska Department of Education confirmed that the U.S. Department of Education would not disburse essential grants, including Migrant Education and 21st Century Community Learning Centers, as expected on July 1. These programs are vital for providing educational opportunities and support services to diverse student populations.
Democrat Sen. Löki Tobin, chair of the Senate Education Committee, criticized the administration’s actions as an attack on the right to quality education. "This move hits Alaska schools hard, particularly with additional budget deficits exacerbated by recent state funding cuts," she stated. Anchorage School District, serving about 43,000 students, has initiated a hiring freeze due to uncertainty over financial resources.
The delayed funding could disrupt summer programs and educational support services, intensifying financial strain on already struggling school districts. Alaska’s education system is grappling with severe budget shortfalls compounded by a recent veto of per-student funding by Governor Mike Dunleavy.
As stakeholders await clarity on federal funding, officials stress the need for comprehensive solutions to address lasting impacts on education. "Every child deserves access to quality education; denying opportunity is unacceptable," Tobin asserted.
The educational landscape in Alaska faces an uncertain future as decisions loom about budget adjustments and funding restoration, emphasizing the urgent need for resolution.
