Northwest Compact and State-to-State Agreements Bolster Alaskan Firefighting Resources

By Alaska Fire PIOs on July 6, 2025

The Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection is leveraging local, state, and federal partnerships to enhance firefighting efforts amid a challenging wildfire season, which has become the nation’s highest wildfire priority. With the current overwhelming demand for firefighting resources, these collaborations are crucial.

Two significant mechanisms for augmenting Alaskan crews include the Northwest Fire Fighting Compact (NW Compact) and state-to-state agreements. The NW Compact, which includes wildland fire agencies from U.S. states such as Alaska, Oregon, and Washington, as well as Canadian provinces like British Columbia and Alberta, facilitates the rapid deployment of firefighting resources. Currently, four crews mobilized under this compact are actively working in Alaska.

Additionally, the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) coordinates state-to-state agreements, enabling a swift response from states across the country. As a result, six crews are currently assisting Alaskan efforts through these agreements, bringing much-needed manpower and expertise.

Both the NW Compact and state-to-state agreements significantly enhance the capabilities of Alaska’s firefighting operations, especially with over 420,000 acres already burned this year across multiple large-scale wildfires. This cooperative approach ensures that Alaskan communities, infrastructure, and natural resources receive the protection they need during this critical time.

As the fire situation continues to evolve, the collaboration among these agencies reminds us of the strength found in unity and shared commitment to public safety.

For more updates, stay tuned for further reports and developments regarding the ongoing firefighting efforts.
